TEFL Volunteer

International Volunteer Work Teaching English in India with Projects Abroad
Company name: Projects Abroad
Location: Madurai and the surrounding area, Tamil Nadu.
Qualification: TEFL qualified.
Experience: Previous experience is not required.
Job description: Deeply ingrained in the hearts of the young people in all of these areas is a desire to speak English, the language that can put them in touch with the rest of the world.
As an English teaching volunteer, you will therefore play a vital role in improving the spoken skills and future options open to the children and teachers at the schools where we work. You can teach younger children or teenagers but whatever the age, you will find that the students are eager to learn all about western culture and your life back home, and taking advantage of this enthusiasm is the first lesson you will learn in your quest to improve their spoken English and comprehension.
Classes can vary in size depending on the school and age of the children, but you will usually be teaching between thirty and forty students per class. You could be teaching children as young as three years old or teenagers preparing for their final exams. Each volunteer is expected to have about four hours of contact time in the classroom from Monday to Friday.
The Teaching project in India is available for two weeks if you don't have time to join us for a month or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for short term volunteering for both the host community and the volunteer. Although you will gain a valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone volunteering for a longer period. Volunteers who can only join us for two weeks will be paired up with another longer term teaching volunteer.

One of the most unique aspects about the Teach English in India volunteer programme is that it provides you with in-country teacher training before you commence with the placement. 1. One week of intensive training with a qualified teacher and will include an introduction to the Indian education system.
2.20 hours of observation.
3. You are instructed in how to use teaching tools.
4.You visit a small nursery school.

Once the training has been completed, you will be placed in a school for underprivileged children and your role will involve:
1.Working with the class teacher
2. Taking smaller groups independently
3. Preparing teaching aids
4. Tutoring children individually who may need additional assistance

You may also be able to help the children with basic maths like counting, art and craft sessions or even taking the children out for educational trips. Some projects may even require your assistance in running sessions in conversational English with adults, who might either be beneficiaries of the programme or teachers and staff.
Duration: From 5 weeks to 3 months.
Start Dates: 2nd Monday of every month.
Requirements:*You do not need to have any formal training or experience to participate in a program, but whatever experience you do have will be taken into account.

Challenging Work with Orphaned Children in bustling Madurai!
Company name: Travellers Worldwide
Location: Madurai, Tamil Nadu
Qualification: No TEFLs are required although they are useful.
Experience: No previous teaching experience although it is useful.
Job description: We would be very keen to know subjects you studied for a-levels, highers, IB or degree and if you would be interested in teaching them. We often have requests for people to help with music, drama, art and sports as these subjects are very often neglected.
In most cases the ability to speak just a little English means access to better jobs and better opportunities.
Often, local teachers are excellent at teaching grammar and literature, probably better than most 'native' English speakers. However, many of these teachers have asked us to send people to help teach the spoken word.
For those whom English is not their first language, getting the hang of the phonetics, how you pronounce the letters and words, is not something they can teach easily and so this is something they need some help with. Therefore, you don't have to be a qualified teacher to help. A good command of spoken English is all you need.
In some of our destinations English is already widely spoken, Ghana and India for example. Spoken English is still valuable but here you can also get involved with helping to teach maths, science, sport, geography, etc.
